Werner Joins FMCSA on Fox & Friends to Highlight Freedom Haulers Initiative

In recognition of National Hire a Veteran Day, CVTA member Werner Enterprises joined Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Administrator Derek D. Barrs on Fox & Friends Weekend to highlight new efforts to connect America’s veterans with careers in trucking.



Werner Chairman & CEO Derek Leathers, FMCSA Administrator Derek Barrs and Werner Road Team Captains Eric Macedo and Robert Lowe joined Fox & Friends to discuss veterans transitioning from the military into rewarding careers in the trucking industry. Lowe, who served 20 years in the Army, explained that many of the skills he developed in the military translated well to his career behind the wheel. Macedo shared his experience completing CDL training while serving in the National Guard and now visiting military installations and job fairs to introduce other veterans to opportunities in trucking. The appearance followed the U.S. Department of Transportation’s launch of Freedom Haulers, an interagency campaign designed to help veterans move from military service into trucking careers. Led by DOT, with participation from the Departments of Veterans Affairs, Labor, and War, the initiative connects veterans with information on CDL training, GI Bill benefits, military skills test waivers, and employment opportunities.

The segment reflects a broader industry effort supporting the Freedom Haulers campaign. CVTA members participating in the initiative include training providers such as Troops Into Transportation, TransTech, and Lehigh Carbon Community College along with carrier partners such as Werner Enterprises, Stevens Transport, Schneider and others. Through the campaign, these organizations are helping veterans build on their military experience by connecting them with the training, preparation and career opportunities needed to succeed in trucking and keep America moving.
