CVTA’s ELDT Task Force has been working alongside NAPFTDS, ATA, and other stakeholders to encourage the U.S. Department of Transportation to increase enforcement of the Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) Training Provider Registry.

This week marked an important moment in that pursuit, as CVTA Executive Director Andrew Poliakoff discussed the issue at length with Secretary Sean P. Duffy during a National Truck Driver Appreciation Week event in New Jersey.

“I spoke with Secretary Duffy for a good while on the issue of ELDT/TPR enforcement, and he was very receptive to the need to remove bad actors from the Training Provider Registry. What’s more, the truck drivers and others in attendance strongly echoed the need for enforcement as part of the greater USDOT enforcement surge set in motion by the tragic crash in Florida in August.” — Andrew Poliakoff, CVTA Executive Director.

At the conclusion of the event, Secretary Duffy stated the following in a USDOT video piece: “We’re getting graduates from schools that are getting licensed in states where these are not qualified drivers... and we’ve seen that many of them can’t speak the language, this is a huge problem.” This important quote can be seen in the video USDOT released on Tuesday on Secretary Duffy’s social media channels.

CVTA was pleased to hear Secretary Duffy’s remarks about substandard ‘graduates’ and sees his comments as a pivotal indicator that USDOT is ready to turn their lens of enforcement to ELDT/TPR violators, alongside recent actions to clean up CDL issuance fraud and eliminate ELP violators in the industry. It’s now critical that FMCSA takes this momentum and turns it into demonstrable action to remove bad actors from the Training Provider Registry.”— Andrew Poliakoff, CVTA Executive Director.
