Tulsa-based Melton Truck Lines was recently featured on FOX23 News – In Depth, where the discussion focused on the federal government’s increased oversight of commercial driver’s license (CDL) issuers. The segment addressed the persistent issue of “CDL mills,” which are programs that provide rushed, inadequate instruction, leaving students unprepared and compromising safety.

Lisa Mason, Melton’s Vice President of Safety, highlighted significant disparities in training quality across the country. Some students receive months of structured instruction, while others finish programs in just a few days. She stressed the need for a consistent, standards-based curriculum and for removing non-compliant providers to maintain the integrity of the CDL system.

Vincent stated, "Anyone who gets a CDL in a day or two might as well throw it away."

As it stands, Melton’s recruiters noted that the company does not hire graduates of CDL mills; instead, it prioritizes candidates trained through reputable, nationally recognized programs, including CVTA and NAPFTDS-member schools.

This approach demonstrates their commitment to fleet safety and workforce readiness through high-quality training.

The FOX23 segment aired as federal officials ordered several Oklahoma CDL issuers to halt operations pending review. This is part of a broader national effort to ensure CDLs are issued only to individuals who meet federal training requirements. These actions highlight the need to protect students, prevent misuse of workforce funds, and address preventable safety risks.

CVTA continues to advocate for strong, consistent enforcement of the Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) standards, consistent oversight of non-compliant providers, and policies that support reputable schools and carriers committed to high-quality, safety-focused training.
