Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Administrator Derek D. Barrs recently visited CVTA member Covenant Logistics, highlighting the importance of responsible driver hiring, carrier-led development, regulatory oversight, and safety-focused workforce investment in strengthening the commercial motor vehicle industry.
The visit allowed FMCSA Administrator Derek Barrs to observe Covenant’s approach to identifying, developing, and supporting qualified commercial drivers. For carriers, driver hiring is more than an operational task; it is a safety imperative, a compliance obligation, and a reflection of organizational accountability.
Covenant’s training and driver development programs demonstrate the structured, safety-centered workforce model that CVTA continues to promote across the commercial driver training and carrier communities. A CDL is an important credential, but it is not the endpoint of driver preparation. The transition from licensure to professional operation requires disciplined evaluation, continued coaching, effective supervision, and a culture that reinforces safety as a core business standard.
This alignment between hiring, training, and oversight is particularly important as FMCSA maintains its focus on driver qualification, Entry-Level Driver Training implementation, enforcement consistency, and accountability across the commercial motor vehicle sector. Federal standards establish the foundation, but their effectiveness depends on serious implementation by reputable training providers, responsible carriers, and regulators committed to meaningful oversight.
CVTA is proud to see member organizations like Covenant Logistics engaged directly with FMCSA on these priorities. Covenant’s approach reflects a broader industry principle: a strong driver pipeline must be built on quality, accountability, and long-term workforce development rather than short-term hiring needs. Responsible driver selection, structured onboarding, ongoing support, and clear safety expectations all contribute to safer operations and a more resilient commercial driver workforce.
As the industry continues to address workforce demand, safety must remain the defining standard for driver recruitment, hiring, and development. FMCSA’s visit to Covenant reinforces a critical message for policymakers, regulators, schools, and carriers: the strength of the driver workforce depends not only on how many drivers enter the profession, but on how well they are prepared, evaluated, and supported once they do. Safer roads begin with disciplined hiring, rigorous preparation, and industry partners committed to sustained accountability.
