CVTA Member C1 Truck Driver Training Highlights English Proficiency in CDL Training

Recent WISH-TV coverage featuring CVTA member C1 Truck Driver Training examined how Indiana’s English proficiency requirement applies to CDL testing and the role training providers play in preparing qualified drivers.

House Enrolled Act 1200, signed into law in March, requires commercial drivers to demonstrate sufficient English proficiency. However, the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles told WISH-TV that it will not introduce a separate proficiency test because the state already administers its CDL and commercial learner’s permit examinations in English.

C1 Truck Driver Training helps more than 500 students earn their CDLs each year at its Indianapolis location. C1 President Matt Carroll explained that instructors incorporate road-sign comprehension directly into behind-the-wheel training.

“We need you to read the signs; we need you to hang a right at Emerson Avenue,” Carroll told WISH-TV.

Carroll emphasized that English proficiency is ultimately a safety issue. Drivers must be able to understand road signs, communicate with law enforcement, and respond appropriately while operating a commercial motor vehicle.

The coverage highlights the important role reputable CDL schools play in turning safety requirements into practical instruction and ensuring new drivers are prepared before entering the roadway.
