CVTA Chairman Jeff Burkhardt was recently featured in The Epoch Times in a report addressing commercial driver training quality and federal oversight. The coverage follows several fatal commercial vehicle crashes and increased Department of Transportation enforcement against non-compliant training providers.
As federal regulators move to remove thousands of entities from the Training Provider Registry (TPR), the report highlights ongoing concerns about inconsistent oversight and the risks posed by so-called “CDL mills.” Burkhardt addressed misleading marketing by some illicit providers, stating that certain truck driver training companies are “just shameless in their advertising.” He added, “One day CDL, two-day, three-day CDL—that’s listed on their websites.” The report also examines the implementation of Entry-Level Driver Training standards and the challenges of self-certification.
The article also features Anne Bauza, President of the Driver Resource Center and CVTA member, who emphasized that limited federal oversight has contributed to the growth of CDL mills. “These programs rush students through the process within a couple of days or maybe weeks, with just a little or no real instruction,” Bauza said. “They’re focusing strictly on passing the test, giving them the basic knowledge that they need to take the driving test, but without the other requirements that are necessary for them to build a building block.”
CVTA continues to advocate for consistent enforcement of federal training standards to ensure every new driver receives structured, proficiency-based instruction that prioritizes safety and professionalism.
