The August Board Retreat brought CVTA board members to Washington, D.C., from across the country to focus on the association’s top priorities. A major portion of the meeting centered on the ELDT Task Force and CVTA’s ongoing advocacy with Congress and FMCSA. Members reviewed the status of removing non-compliant schools from the Training Provider Registry (TPR) and discussed strategies to accelerate momentum.
With the upcoming surface transportation reauthorization on the horizon, the board emphasized the importance of strengthening CVTA’s presence on Capitol Hill. In addition to continued success with direct congressional advocacy, members explored ways to engage legislators through school visits and coordinated grassroots efforts. During an extended discussion with FMCSA officials, CVTA board members pressed the agency to exercise stronger enforcement and oversight, making clear that the registry must deliver on its promise to protect carriers, students, and the public.

The meeting also highlighted updates on funding and grant opportunities, PTDI initiatives, and communication priorities. The board examined strategies to better position trucking within the trades framework, underscoring how CDL training contributes to economic growth and workforce development. The Marketing & Communications Committee emphasized the importance of consistent messaging across newsletters, social media, and member resources, while also exploring expanded outreach through webinars and traditional media. Looking ahead to the fall conference in Phoenix, the board focused on ways to strengthen member engagement, expand networking opportunities, and reinforce CVTA’s role as the leading voice for safe, high-quality truck driver training nationwide.
