New Round of FMCSA Audits Underway

Learn more about FMCSA audits, compliance expectations, and what they mean for CDL training providers at the: 2026 Fall Conference

Earlier this week, FMCSA briefed CVTA on Operation Driver Training II, a nationwide oversight initiative that will take place July 2–30, 2026.


Due to its importance to members, we are releasing this information.


Unlike Operation Driver Training I, which primarily consisted of questionnaires and limited compliance reviews, this initiative will involve comprehensive on-site audits of selected Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) providers.


What Training Providers Were Selected

FMCSA stated that 366 active training locations, representing all categories of ELDT providers, were selected because they trained drivers who were involved in fatal crashes between February 2022 (when ELDT became effective) and approximately May 2026.


FMCSA noted two important points on this subject:

  • A driver being "involved" in a fatal crash does not mean the driver was determined to be at fault.

  • Selection for an investigation does not indicate that a training provider violated ELDT requirements.

Timeline & Process

  • Investigation Period: July 2–30, 2026

  • FMCSA indicated that notification letters will be distributed over the next week. (e.g., a school being reviewed on July 29th should know within in the next seven days).

  • Schools selected for review should have requested documentation readily available upon the investigators' arrival.

Possible Outcomes

According to FMCSA, providers should expect one of two outcomes following an investigation:

  • Notice of No Further Action, including a copy of the investigation report; or

  • Notice of Proposed Removal, accompanied by the investigation report supporting the proposed removal.


FMCSA also stated that every provider investigated will receive a copy of the investigation report, regardless of the outcome.
