Senator Deb Fischer (R-NE) is widely recognized for her leadership on issues affecting the trucking industry and military veterans. As a member of the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee and the Armed Services Committee, she has consistently advocated for modernizing highway infrastructure, strengthening the supply chain, and supporting service members transitioning to civilian careers.

During the Trucking Cares Foundation award ceremony, Executive Director Andrew Poliakoff had the opportunity to personally thank Senator Fischer for her work on the veterans’ bill and her commitment to training integrity during the Senate Commerce Committee’s recent hearing on surface transportation reauthorization. Her questions during the “Shifting Gear” hearing on Surface Reauthorization highlighted the urgent need to enforce the Training Provider Registry and hold non-compliant entities accountable, ensuring that federal Entry-Level Driver Training standards achieve their intended safety outcomes.

Senator Fischer, along with Senator Alex Padilla (D-CA), Representatives Chris Pappas (D-NH) and Chuck Edwards (R-NC), received the 2025 Congressional Hero Award from the American Trucking Associations’ Trucking Cares Foundation at the U.S. Capitol. The award honors her leadership in advancing the Veteran Improvement Commercial Driver License Act of 2023, which allows veterans to use GI Bill benefits at new branch campuses of approved CDL training schools without unnecessary delays. This legislation is a key step in helping veterans enter the trucking profession.

Senator Fischer’s efforts highlight the critical link between workforce development and highway safety- an approach CVTA strongly supports, by ensuring career opportunities in trucking are paired with strong oversight of training providers to protect the public.
