CVTA Applauds USDOT’s “America is Building Again” Initiative and Administration’s Nomination of Chief Derek Barrs.
Recently, U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy unveiled the Department’s America is Building Again initiative—an ambitious plan to modernize the nation’s transportation systems by reducing bureaucratic delays, accelerating infrastructure projects, and enhancing safety across the board. The Commercial Vehicle Training Association (CVTA) commends the Department of Transportation (DOT) for its vision, and we believe this initiative reflects a genuine desire to partner with industry stakeholders in a meaningful, solution-oriented way.
This initiative also comes at a key moment as DOT and Congress begin early work on the next surface transportation reauthorization, which is due by September 2026. CVTA was pleased to see House T&I Committee Chairman, Rep. Sam Graves, and Highways & Transit Subcommittee Chair Rep. David Rouzer emphasize the bipartisan nature of the forthcoming reauthorization process. This legislation will shape funding, priorities, and regulatory direction for agencies like the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).
CVTA is especially encouraged by the Administration’s recent nomination of Chief Derek Barrs to serve as the next FMCSA Administrator. CVTA has long called for stronger enforcement of the Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) Rule and greater accountability within the Training Provider Registry. Chief Barrs brings deep experience from his years in law enforcement and regulatory leadership in Florida—experience that will be critical in strengthening oversight and advancing safety nationwide. His nomination is a clear indication that this administration values input from those on the ground and understands the importance of partnering with industry to achieve progress.
CVTA remains fully engaged in these conversations. As always, we will continue to advocate for a modern, efficient, and responsive transportation system that supports the success of our students, strengthens our schools, and enables growth for our industry partners. We’ll keep you informed every step of the way—what’s happening, what it means, and how you can be part of the process.
