A special thank you to one of our newest members, Shell Lubricants, for sponsoring our opening night reception. David Waterman was a perfect host, and a great time was had by all. We are proud to have Shell Lubricants as a member, and we look forward to working with them. The conference began with the CVTA Business Meeting providing an overview of the activities of your trade association. We were pleased to award the annual Board Member of the Year Award to John Frey of Werner Enterprises and the CVTA Member of the Year to Gary Strube of International Schools. We also said a grateful thank you to Brad Ball of Roadmaster for his four years of service on the CVTA Board and thanked him for an excellent job as Chairman of the CVTA Finance Committee.
Our association is growing rapidly, and we welcomed the following new members at the Fall Conference.
We are also delighted to welcome ScreeningOne back to CVTA Membership.
Our first speaker Bob Costello, Chief Economist, American Trucking Associations provided the Group with an Economic and Trucking Industry Update. Bob is the most prominent economist in the trucking industry. His presentation provided a straightforward analysis of the economy today, tomorrow and into the future.
Our next presenter was Robert Dumas, Education Liaison for the VA Educational Services. Mr. Dumas provided an overview of the Post 9/11 Bill and GI Benefits that go into effect October 1, 2011. The Post 9/11 Bill has significant improvements that will help all of our schools.
After lunch we were honored to have FMCSA's Deputy Administrator, Bill Bronrott who addressed the group on the current activities of the agency regarding different programs especially the safety issues. This presentation also provided the group the opportunity to have a discussion with the Deputy regarding current rulemakings, including the proposed rule on entry-level driver training.
Next up, was John Hazard, a partner at Webster Chamberlain and Bean. Mr. Hazard provided the group with an in-depth analysis of The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and how it will affect your company.
Last, but certainly not least, was Dr. Gary Petty, President and CEO of the National Private Truck Council. Dr. Petty gave a spirited presentation on Private Trucking Operations and the Potential Job Opportunities for Truck Drivers. This Council represents companies whose primary business purpose is not trucking, but for which trucking plays a critical role in fulfilling corporate purposes.
We began the second day of our Conference with Marlin Caddell of Randall-Reilly who made a fascinating presentation on Social Media and educated the group on how to make it work as a recruiting tool for member companies.
Kendis Paris, National Director of Truckers Against Trafficking was our final presenter. Ms. Paris spoke to the issue of human trafficking, a term for modern-day slavery, and how it is a $32 billion worldwide industry with more than 27 million people enslaved. It has been reported in all 50 states, and the number of victims in the U.S. is estimated in the hundreds of thousands. Ms. Paris spoke about the website and phone number that has been created to enable members of the trucking/travel plaza industry and other travelers to learn what you can do to help stop this atrocity. We encourage all members to become involved with the activities of the group.
The meeting ended with a changing of the guard. Michael Darling, Western Truck School, handed the CVTA Gavel to our new Chairperson, Cheryl Hanley, United Truck Driving School. The CVTA Board of Directors welcomes two new members Gary Strube, International Truck School who is the Chairman of the Education Committee and John Diab, Smith and Solomon who now becomes Chairman of the Legislative Committee.
We hope you will all mark your calendar for March 14-16, 2012 and join us in San Francisco for our Spring Conference 2012 at the Argonaut Hotel. That conference already has major speakers lined up, and will include an update on the Entry-Level Driver Training rulemaking, which is currently scheduled to be released as a Final Rule before that conference.
